Flight Free Australia launched on 31 October last year, and our first year has obviously been unique in so many ways … including
- Attracting 75 Pledgers
- Prioritising our online outreach with Covid-19 lockdown measures in place through:
— our website (revamped in August),
— our Facebook page (including “This Christmas leave the flying to Santa”, and “Top #10 reasons to go flight free” memes ), and
— our YouTube channel (now including the Infrequent Flyer promotion, the When will it be safe to fly again? presentation video, and the Travel advisory alert music video “I will help Australia…” accumulating over 1000 views). - Presenting at the National Sustainable Living Festival in February, and The Greens Tasmanian State Conference
- Establishing FFA as a go-to media source on aviation emissions through radio interviews (Climate Conversations, The Sustainability Hour, and Girls on Air), online magazine articles (Green Left, and Tasmanian Times), online video interviews (Newsy.com), and online news interviews (NBC News, The Guardian, Fairfax Media, Matador travel network, The Straits Times, and Traveller.com).
- Networking with other FlightFree groups, the Stay Grounded network, Fly Less Kiwis, the International Climate Safe Travel Institute, the Flightless and Aviation Emissions Australia Facebook groups, the Victorian Climate Action Network, and the National Climate Emergency Summit
- Surveying peak climate and environment NGOs on their travel policies, and drafting a travel policy review mechanism for Australian university academics
- Setting up a dialogue with the Victorian and South Australian governments on supporting an ongoing interstate rail service.
- Submitting to the federal Technology Innovation Road Map review.
- Meeting weekly via Zoom, with between-meeting liaison via Slack and GoogleDocs accounts
